Perfume company Jovan is generally credited with being the first music tour sponsor when they backed The Rolling Stones 1981 USA tour.
Wrong.
Gags had already struck a deal with natural food supplement brand Bio-Strath as early as 1978 when, for a brief period, they would appear on stage sporting Bio-Strath t-shirts and hats.
John Kelly, who brokered the arrangement with a Stockport based UK distributor, is still scratching his head over the association.
“I’m not sure how four drunken and disreputable layabouts represented the aspirant lifestyle Bio-Strath promised. Maybe we were the ‘before’ in some sort of ‘Before and After’ campaign they were planning.”
The band would distribute free samples of Bio-Strath at gigs, the phial like packaging getting many a fan over-excited before they discovered it really was a herbal yeast daily diet supplement.
Bio-Strath still exists today and is sold in over fifty countries worldwide.
